Brain Knutson 與Dr.

10:00-11:00 Neuroforecasting aggregate choice

In the past two decades, neuroimaging research has progressed from resolving distinct neural activity during anticipation of good and bad outcomes to predicting individual financial choices (ranging from purchasing to financial risk taking). But can neuroimaging data inform forecasts about market-scale financial outcomes? I will present findings from recent research on microlending and crowdfunding suggesting not only that neuroimaging data may help researchers to forecast market outcomes, but that in some cases, these brain-based forecasts may prove more informative than choice itself.

11:00-12:00 Cultural variation in the social judgment of smiles: The role of ideal affect

In this talk, I describe a series of studies demonstrating that cultural differences in how people ideally want to feel (their “ideal affect”) shape how people judge and treat others. Consistent with previous findings that European Americans value excitement states more than East Asians, European Americans rate excited (vs. calm) faces as more affiliative (friendly, extraverted) than do East Asians. I will describe the neural mechanisms underlying these differences, and the implications these differences have for a range of behaviors, including with whom we share resources and whom we hire for a job.

【Dr. Brian Knutson】

Professor of Psychology & Neuroscience
Stanford University

Research focuses on the neural basis of emotional experience and expression. He investigates the topic with a number of methods including self-report, measurement of nonverbal behavior, comparative ethology, psychopharmacology, and neuroimaging.

【Dr. Jeanne L. Tsai】

Professor of Psychology
Stanford University

My research examines how culture shapes affective processes (emotions, moods, feelings) and the implications cultural differences in these processes have for what decisions people make, how people think about health and illness, and how people perceive and respond to others in an increasingly multicultural world.
